In The Dark V0.4b Update Notes (Browser Performance Improvement)


After launching V0.4 a few days ago, it was clear that the browser version was experiencing rather bad performance. After some testing, I found that the lights and shadows were taking up more resources than they really needed. By reducing the number of active shadow casters in each scene, I was able to make some massive performance gains. V0.4b adds somewhere around 100 fps to every scene, if not more. These improvements also follow over to the executable version, which should also perform much more smoothly.

Here is the change log for V0.4b:

  • fixed the shadows on some thin walls that would extend past their shape
  • Improved performance on all levels by limiting the use of shadow casters
  • Fixed positioning of walls in some levels that would allow the player to see outside the level
  • Added the first iteration of the story ending (still extremely early on)


The next update to come will be V0.8 which I plan to have a completed story in. It should be out before the end of May so if you are interested you won't be waiting very long. Thanks for reading!
